Soil Fungi
The Mycorrhizal Foundation – Organic UK Lawn Treatment for Root Health (40g)
The Yard Bros Philosophy: Every legendary yard starts with a "Soil Snack." We don't just plant grass; we build a symbiotic community. Soil Fungi is the foundation of the Yard Bros system because you can't have top-tier stripes without a top-tier root system and that's true whether you're doing spring lawn care or a full autumn renovation.
Most UK lawns have lost it. Decades of synthetic fertiliser, fungicide and compaction have killed the fungal network beneath our feet. Grass that should be drinking from a 700% larger root system is drinking through what amounts to a straw.
Soil Fungi puts it back. Real living spores, properly cultured, ready to colonise your soil and rebuild what should have been there all along.
What's Inside
Premium mycorrhizal fungi spores. A curated blend of Glomus species, the genus that forms the most effective associations with cool-season grasses common to UK lawns.
These "good fungi" attach to your roots, effectively increasing their surface area by up to 700% so they can find water and nutrients your grass would otherwise miss. One of the most powerful organic lawn treatments you can apply to a lawn.
Once watered into the soil, these fungi germinate, attach to grass roots, and grow outward as a hyphal network that can extend the effective root surface area by up to 700%. That means more water, more nutrients, and more drought resilience without your lawn doing any extra work.
Living biology, not a chemical. Apply once. Let it work for years.
Why It Works
- Renovation Essential: The secret to high success rates with new seed or turf on UK lawns.
- Deep Roots: Builds a massive, permanent underground network that persists for years.
- Optimised Rates: 20g per 100m² for existing lawn health; 40g per 100m² for new renovations.
- Drought Defence: Significant improvement in water uptake during dry spells — essential for UK summer lawn care.
-
Establishment King: Essential for high success rates when seeding or turfing.
- Disease Suppression: beneficial fungi outcompete pathogenic species at the root zone
- Nutrient Unlock: accesses phosphorus and trace minerals that grass roots can't reach alone
- Compatible With Seed: coat seeds at sowing for a measurable germination boost
How to Use
Dose:
Existing lawn maintenance: 20g per 100m²
Renovation, overseeding new turf: 40g per 100m²
Application: apply dry, evenly distributed across the area. A flour sifter, hand-broadcaster, or even a seed spreader works.
Best timing:
- During aeration (drop directly into core holes)
- At the moment of overseeding (mix with seed before sowing)
- Before laying new turf (broadcast on the soil surface)
- Anytime soil conditions allow watering-in within 24 hours
Activation: water in immediately after application. Spores need moisture to germinate and find roots.
Compatible with: all UK lawn grass species (ryegrass, fescue, bent, meadow), all existing fertilisers, all soil types.
What to Expect
Weeks 1 to 2: spores germinate and begin colonising root zones (invisible above ground)
Weeks 3 to 6: root mass starts visibly increasing. Pull a small core, you can see it.
Months 2 to 3: drought tolerance noticeably improved, lawn holds colour during dry spells
Month 4 onwards: the network is established. You generally don't need to reapply unless you renovate, deeply till, or use fungicides.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these the same fungi I'd find in a healthy meadow?
Yes. Glomus species are the dominant mycorrhizal fungi in undisturbed UK grassland. They're naturally present in healthy soils. Decades of synthetic fertiliser and fungicide use have depleted them in most domestic lawns. We're putting them back.
Will Soil Fungi work in clay soil? Sandy soil?
Yes to both. Mycorrhizal fungi work across UK soil types, though they're particularly transformative in compacted clay and nutrient-poor sandy soils where grass roots struggle alone.
Do I need to keep applying it?
Once established, the fungal network self-perpetuates. Reapply only if you renovate, deeply till the soil, or apply fungicides (which kill mycorrhizae alongside pathogens) and when you overseed/repair patches.
Can I use this with synthetic fertiliser?
You can, but you're undermining the work the fungi are doing. High synthetic nitrogen sends a signal that switches off the mycorrhizal partnership at the root level. Pair Soil Fungi with our Rejuvenate and Seaweed for the system to work properly.
How long do the spores stay viable in the bag?
24 months unopened, 12 months once opened, stored cool and dry. Beyond that the spores progressively lose viability.
Can children and pets be on the lawn after application?
Yes, immediately. These are naturally occurring soil organisms. Once watered in, you wouldn't know they're there.
